Events planned to recognize Women’s Health Week

The Olson Center for Women’s Health will celebrate Women’s Health Week, a special time each year for women to invest in their physical and mental health.

This year, four wellness and educational events will be offered. The wellness events on May 15 and May 17 are in person and space is limited; pre-registration is required.

Tuesday, May 14
UNMC College of Nursing and Olson Center webinar on food insecurity in Nebraska 

Natalia Santos, of the UNMC College of Public Health Department of Health Promotion, will present an online webinar, “Exploring the Topic of Food Insecurity in Nebraska,” at noon. 

Food insecurity affects 37 million Americans, and 2.2 million affected households are in rural communities. This presentation aims to introduce participants to concepts of food insecurity and how it impacts Nebraskans.

This is a free event and open to the community. Nursing credit available at no cost.

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by University of Nebraska Medical Center and Olson Center for Women’s Health. University of Nebraska Medical Center is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the health care team. The University of Nebraska Medical Center designates this activity for 1.0 ANCC contact hour. Nurses should only claim credit for the actual time spent participating in the activity. Wellness Through Doing: Cake Decorating 101

Emma Freedman, owner of Freedman Baking Company, will teach the basics of cake decorating. With some basic buttercream decorating skills, you too can impress friends and family with beautiful cakes.

This class will be from 3-4:30 p.m. in the Olson Center classroom with the cost of $40. Participants will take home basic decorating tools and a beautiful cake they decorate. Space is limited.

Stroke and women

Stroke affects women differently than men, with women having a higher lifetime risk of suffering a stroke and worse outcomes. Marco Gonzalez Castellon, MD, vascular neurologist in the UNMC Department of Neurological Sciences and medical director of the Nebraska Medicine Telestroke Program, will discuss the risk factors that contribute to this increased risk, as well as interventions that can help prevent stroke. Treatment options for those who have experienced a stroke also will be reviewed. This online presentation will be held from noon-1 p.m. To register, email the Olson Center or call 402-559-6345.

Join the Olson Center for Women’s Health and Silent Book Club Omaha in the Olson Center classroom at noon to read. There will be time before and after the silent reading to converse with fellow book lovers. Space is limited, and registration is required.
