NEWBERRY, Mich. (WLUC) – LMAS District Health Department (LMAS) in partnership with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), and Michigan State Police to protect children from unsecured firearms.

LMAS has obtained a supply of cable-style gun locks from MDHHS that are available for free at each LMAS office while supplies last.

In 2020, firearms injuries became the number one cause of death for children in the United States and Michigan, surpassing motor vehicle deaths and those caused by other injuries.

Public Act 17 of 2023, which took effect Feb. 13, 2024, generally requires individuals to keep stored or unattended firearms unloaded and locked with a locking device or stored in a locked box or container if it is known or reasonable should be known that a minor is, or is likely to be, present on the premises.

“At LMAS District Health Department we recognize the U.P. has strong traditions of hunting, fishing, trapping, and other outdoor activities. Many residents own and possess firearms and by providing gun locks to firearm owners free of charge we can help them store their guns safely and keep their children, friends, and families safe.” Said Nicholas Derusha, LMAS District Health Department Director, and Health Officer.

Residents in Luce, Mackinac, Alger, and Schoolcraft counties may now come into any LMAS office and pick up a free gun lock, no questions asked. The locks can also be picked up through Project ChildSafe police partners across the state.

Gun lock installation instructions are included within the product’s packaging and available on the Project ChildSafe website.
