UISD counselors trained on mental health and bullying laws
LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – Over 90 counselors from the United Independent School District (UISD) attended a special training session on Monday, April 29, focused on their professional growth. With students away for the day, counselors engaged in learning opportunities to better support students.
During the training, counselors had the opportunity to listen to presentations from experts on mental health issues that students may be facing. They also received updates on recent legislation, including David’s Law, named in memory of a boy from San Antonio who suffered from cyberbullying.
Officials with the district highlighted that the training doesn’t stop with the staff on campus; it extends to families at home as well.
Melissa Ramirez, director of guidance and counseling at UISD, emphasized the importance of parents understanding David’s Law. “We provide them with a one-page sheet whenever there is bullying so that parents can be aware and help us work together to ensure school safety and prevent bullying,” Ramirez stated.
It’s important to note that repeated bullying can escalate to become a felony offense.
