What is Fitbit Labs, Google’s upcoming AI powered health coaching tool
Fitbit Labs is an upcoming AI-powered feature for Fitbit Premium users that will offer new features like a chatbot that can answer questions about your health in a natural and conversational manner
Fitbit devices are known to offer deep insights into different health metrics that can be used to improve your overall fitness. Fitbit watches are easy to use and are popular because of their activity-tracking features. The Google-owned company is now planning to introduce something called ‘Fitbit Labs’ for Fitbit Premium subscribers which uses AI to offer fitness coaching.
Since the functionality is currently under development, not much is known about the upcoming feature, but here’s everything we know so far about the Fitbit Labs. In a recent video posted on YouTube titled “The Check Up with Google Health 2024”, Google shared some information on how it is planning to integrate AI with health tracking.

The video suggests that Fitbit Labs will have an AI-powered chatbot that lets users ask questions about certain health metrics or their health in general in a natural and conversational manner. For example, the chatbot will be able to analyse variations in your sleep patterns and quality and use the data to advise on how you can change the intensity of your workout.
The new chatbot will be powered by a new large language model called Personal Health developed by Fitbit and Google Research. Built using Gemini, Google said the model will also power future AI features across the company’s portfolio.
Fitbit has reportedly worked with doctors, sleep coaches, and other professionals to improve the overall accuracy of the Fitbit Labs AI coaching algorithm. The company also said that these tests are compared to practice tests that are used to obtain sleep medicine certifications and that the models are performing pretty well even though they are under development.
The current version of Fitbit’s premium subscription already provides some feedback based on several parameters including sleep and activity levels. Fitbit Labs will be available sometime later this year for a “limited number of Android users who are enrolled in the Fitbit Labs program in the Fitbit mobile app”, so we will have to wait a few more months before knowing more.
