Greely High’s inaugural KyleCares/Active Minds 5K combats mental health stigma in youth
CUMBERLAND (WGME) – Runners hit the pavement early Sunday morning at Greely High School for a good cause: to smash the stigma about mental health struggles in young adults.
Sunday was Greely’s first KyleCares/Active Minds Mental Health Matters 5k.
KyleCares is a nonprofit with a goal of eliminating student self-harm and suicide by creating safe environments where those struggling can ask for help without shame.
The organization was founded by the family of a former New Hampshire college student, Kyle Johnson, who sadly passed away in 2018 after a long battle with his own mental health.
Greely High School started the second chapter of KyleCares in Maine last fall and teamed up with another club of the same mission, Active Minds, to put on Sunday’s event.
